Suntheanine® – Patented Pure L-Theanine for Relaxation, Focus, and Cognitive Support

What is Suntheanine®?

Suntheanine® is Taiyo’s patented, highly purified L-theanine ingredient produced through a proprietary enzymatic manufacturing process designed to mimic the natural formation of L-theanine in green tea leaves.

L-theanine (L-glutamic acid gamma-monoethylamide) is a naturally occurring amino acid predominantly found in green tea and is widely recognized for its ability to promote relaxation, mental clarity, and stress reduction without causing drowsiness.

Suntheanine® is produced as a highly bioavailable, 100% water-soluble ingredient suitable for dietary supplements, beverages, functional foods, and wellness applications.

What is L-Theanine?

L-theanine is the major amino acid naturally occurring in green tea and is considered one of the key compounds responsible for the calming and well-being effects associated with tea consumption.

Unlike sedative substances, L-theanine promotes a relaxed but mentally alert state, making it highly relevant for modern cognitive wellness, stress management, and sleep-support applications.

Suntheanine® Production Technology

Taiyo produces Suntheanine® exclusively through a patented enzymatic process that replicates the natural biosynthesis pathway of L-theanine found in tea plants.

This technology enables the production of exceptionally pure and highly standardized L-theanine without relying on conventional extraction variability.

Product Characteristics

  • 98% pure L-theanine

  • 100% water-soluble

  • Highly bioavailable

  • Crystalline white powder

  • Mild umami taste

  • Suitable for beverages, supplements, and functional foods

Mechanism of Action

L-theanine is a small amino acid derivative structurally related to glutamine. Due to its molecular structure, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and interact with glutamate-sensitive NMDA receptors within the central nervous system.

L-theanine slightly modulates NMDA receptor activity, influencing calcium signaling involved in neuronal excitation. This mechanism is frequently compared with the balancing role of magnesium in relation to calcium-dependent nerve activity.

One of the most recognized physiological effects associated with L-theanine is the promotion of alpha brain wave activity, which is linked to a state of calm mental alertness and relaxed focus.

Clinically Studied Effects of Suntheanine®

Clinical evaluations of Suntheanine® have demonstrated effects related to relaxation, stress reduction, cognitive performance, and sleep quality.

Documented Functional Areas

  • Promotion of a relaxed but alert mental state

  • Support for mental focus and concentration

  • Support for cognitive performance and memory

  • Support for learning ability

  • Reduction of physical and mental stress

  • Support for sleep onset and sleep quality

  • Reduction of caffeine-related side effects

  • Support for emotional well-being and relaxation

In clinical studies, oral administration of 200 mg Suntheanine® significantly increased alpha wave activity within approximately 30–40 minutes. Relaxation-associated effects were also observed at lower intake levels in subjects experiencing anxiety-related symptoms.

Relaxation Without Sedation

Unlike many traditional calming botanicals, Suntheanine® is specifically recognized for promoting relaxation without inducing drowsiness or sedation.

Taiyo emphasizes that Suntheanine® does not impair alertness and may instead support improved concentration, focus, and mental performance.

This differentiates L-theanine from several traditional anti-stress herbal ingredients commonly associated with sedative effects.

Compatibility with Caffeine

L-theanine is frequently combined with caffeine due to its ability to support mental alertness while helping reduce undesirable stimulant-associated effects such as nervousness or overstimulation.

This synergistic combination is widely used in:

  • Cognitive performance products

  • Energy and focus formulations

  • Functional beverages

  • Nootropic applications

Suntheanine® Product Applications

Due to its excellent water solubility and neutral sensory profile, Suntheanine® is suitable for a broad range of formulation systems.

Application Areas

  • Ready-to-drink beverages (RTD)

  • Instant drink powders

  • Dietary supplements

  • Tablets

  • Sachets

  • Effervescent products

  • Functional teas

  • Wellness-focused food applications

Safety and Regulatory Status

Suntheanine® consists of highly purified natural L-theanine with a purity level of approximately 98.9%.

As a glutamine derivative, L-theanine can be metabolized into naturally occurring compounds such as glutamine and ethylamine, both of which are endogenous substances utilized by the human body.
